This mosque is also called Masjid ar-Ra’s, Mosque of the Head (of Husayn ibn Ali), because according to a narration attributed to Ja’far al-Sadiq, the head of his ancestor Husayn was kept in its middle, when being brought to his ‘aduww, Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad.

This is the mausoleum of the great al-Sayyid Abu Ja’far Muhammad, the son of Imam al-Hadi (a) who is of a high place, and Shiites believed that he would be the next Imam after Imam al-Hadi (a), and when he died, Imam al-Hadi (a) pointed out that Imam Hasan al-‘Askari (a) was his successor. When Imam al-Hadi (a) migrated from Medina to Samarra, al-Sayyid Muhammad was still a child, and he joined his father in Samarra when he was mature. He stayed in Samarra for a while until when he decided to return to Medina. When departed from Samarra by nine parasangs and arrived in the village of Balad, he became sick and died there.

According to Sayyid Muhsin al-Amin, when some members of the tribe Banu Asad were burying the bodies of Karbala martyrs, some members of al-Hurr’s tribe did not allow them to bury his body with the rest of the martyrs and buried al-Hurr’s body in a farther location, which was called Nawawis at the time. Therefore, his body was buried at a distance of around one league from the holy tomb of Imam al-Husayn (a).
Presently, al-Hurr’s tomb is located far from Imam al-Husayn’s shrine, around 7 kilometers to the west.

The Al-Abbas Shrine is the mausoleum of Abbas ibn Ali and a mosque, located near the Imam Husayn Mosque in Karbala, Iraq. Abbas was son of Ali ibn Abi Talib and the brother of Imam Hasan and Imam Husayn. He was Husayn’s flag-bearer in the Battle of Karbala and chief of his caravans. The shrine is revered by the Shia Muslims who visit it every year, especially in the month of Muharram.

It stands on the site of the Mausoleum of Husayn, who was a grandson of Muhammad, near the place where he embraced martyrdom during the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE The tomb of Husayn is one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam, outside of Mecca and Medina, and many make pilgrimages to the site. Every year, millions of pilgrims visit the city to observe Ashura, which marks the commemoration of Husayn’s martydom for all muslims.

The Great Mosque of Kufa or Masjid al-Kufa, is located in Kufa, Iraq and is one of the earliest and holiest surviving mosques in the world. The mosque, built in the 7th century, was home to Ali ibn Abi Talib, the 4th Rashidun caliph; and contains the holy shrine of Muslim ibn Aqeel, his companion Hani ibn Urwa; and the revolutionary, Al-Mukhtar.

The Sanctuary of Imām ‘Alī also known as the Mosque of ‘Alī located in Najaf, Iraq, is a mosque which many Muslims believe contains the tomb of ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib, a cousin, son-in-law and companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. According to Shī’ite belief, buried next to ‘Alī within this mosque are the remains of Adam and Nooh. Each year, millions of pilgrims visit the Shrine and pay tribute to Imām ‘Alī.

The Holy City of Samarra

Al-Askari Shrine, or the Al-Askari Mosque is a Shia Muslim mosque and mausoleum in the Iraqi city of Samarra 125 km (78 mi) from Baghdad. It is one of the most important Shia shrines in the world. It was built in 944. The dome was destroyed in a bombing by extremists in February 2006 and its two remaining minarets were destroyed in another bombing in June 2007, causing widespread anger among Shias. The remaining clock tower was also destroyed in July 2007. The dome and minarets were repaired and the mosque reopened in April 2009.
